sustainability

CCNW makes every effort to be kind to the Earth through our
sustainable food and textile management practices!

sustainable food management

What we do:

  • Recover food from grocery stores, Northern Westchester Hospital and local restaurants

  • Compost food waste with the Town of Bedford

  • Source products from Local Farms when available

Why we do it:

  • $218 billion worth of food, an estimated 1/3 of all the food produced in the world goes to waste.

  • 21% of fresh water is used to produce food that is then discarded.

  • 11% of the greenhouse gas emissions that come from the food system could be reduced if we stop wasting food.

  • 21% of landfill volume is food waste.

sustainable textile management

What we do:

RENEWING gently used clothing through a partnership with Eileen Fisher and our Community Shop.

UPCYCLING hand-made products made from donated clothing and fabric

REUSING donated clothing given to those in need or sold at our Community Shop

RECYCLING unusable donations sent to recycling centers or animal shelters

Why we do it:

  • The average person throws out around 112 pounds of clothes annually

  • Less than 15% of unwanted clothes and textiles are recycled

  • 18 million tons of textiles ended up in landfills in 2023

  • 87% of the materials and fibers used to make clothing will end up in either incinerators or landfills.

how can you help?

DONATE!
Each individual or family can help in the fight against food waste by donating UNEXPIRED canned goods, fresh produce, meats, dairy, eggs, and frozen foods. Your donations will be weighed in and put on our pantry shelves to be shared with neighbors in need.

To help with textile waste you can donate unwanted gently used clothing, shoes, or linens to CCNW. Any items in good wearable condition will be taken to our free-of-charge clothing boutique for our families. A small percentage of higher quality items will be sold in our Community Shop, where all proceeds benefit the programs of the Community Center, helping us to keep our food pantry shelves filled.

If you have any questions about donating food or textiles please email or call our Operations Manager, Nicole Sorgi, at 914.232.6572 ext. 105.

Donations are accepted Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Thursday from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Please do not leave donations when the Center is closed.
