Love our Earth

The Community Center makes every effort to be kind to the Earth
through our sustainable food and textile management practices.

SUSTAINABLE FOOD MANAGEMENT

WHAT WE DO:

RECOVER FOOD from grocery stores, Northern Westchester Hospital
and local restaurants

COMPOST food waste with the Town of Bedford

LOCAL FARMS source local products when available

WHY WE DO IT:

  • $218 billion worth of food, an estimated 1/3 of all the food produced in the world goes to waste.
  • 21% of fresh water is used to produce food that is then discarded.
  • 11% of the greenhouse gas emissions that come from the food system could be reduced if we stop wasting food.
  • 21% of landfill volume is food waste.

SUSTAINABLE TEXTILE MANAGEMENT

WHAT WE DO:

RENEWING gently used clothing through a partnership with Eileen Fisher and our Community Shop.

UPCYCLING hand made products made from donated clothing and fabric

REUSING donated clothing given to those in need or sold at our Community Shop

RECYCLING unusable donations sent to recycling centers or animal shelters

WHY WE DO IT:

  • The average person throws out around 81 pounds of clothes annually
  • The fashion industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions
  • 17 million tons of textiles ended up in landfills in 2018, which is 7.7% of all the municipal solid waste in landfill
