Three Katonah Professionals Join Board of Community Center

KATONAH, NY, March 2013 - Three Northern Westchester residents and professionals were named to the Board of Directors of the Community Center of Northern Westchester (CCNW). Sandra Pell, Maureen Thompson and Chrystine Vance-Homer were approved as board members at CCNW’s March 20th 2013 annual meeting.

Sherry Wolf, CCNW’s Executive director, said, “The Center is quite fortunate to have three such skilled, experienced and committed individuals joining its Board.  I have great confidence that they will provide valuable expertise, vision, judgment and diligence to help guide the Center’s work, and I’m delighted that they have agreed to serve the community in this important capacity.”

Sandra Pell, a resident of Westchester County since 1983 and a Katonah resident since 1986, is a Mathematics teacher who has spent most of her career as a private tutor.  She has been running her own business, Additional Help Math Tutoring, since 1983.   Pell has a BA in Mathematics from Cornell University and an MA in Mathematics Education from Columbia University.  She is married and the mother of three adult children, and has a long history of volunteering with CCNW, including career counseling  and ESL and computer instruction.

Maureen Thompson, who has lived in Katonah with her husband for the last 16 years, is an attorney who has worked for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C., providing advice on the regulation of wholesale electric rates, and as counsel to Verizon Communications in New York City.  Thompson currently works as a Senior Contracts Administrator for Statoil North America, Inc. in Stamford, CT.  She has a BA in History from the College of William and Mary and a J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law.  Thompson has served in several volunteer roles at the Center, including helping high school students and their parents negotiate the college application process.

Chrystine Vance-Homer, who lives in Katonah with her husband and middle school aged son, is an independent consultant working on projects with the Pepsi Cola Company.  Vance-Homer previously worked in various positions at Pepsi Cola Company, in areas including national promotion, and customer marketing and logistics.  She has a BS from Ithaca College and an MS from New York University.  She has been an active member of the community, as the president of Katonah Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization, as a board member of the YMCA, and a regular shift as a CCNW volunteer.

The three new board members step into board positions vacated by Shirley Buontempo and Deborah Cerar, who recently stepped down at the conclusion of their respective terms, and Michael Drude, who retired from CCNW’s board in late 2012.

Established in 1992, the not-for-profit Community Center of Northern Westchester provides supplemental food, clothing, and other resources to those in need in 37 communities across Northern Westchester County. The Center is sustained by 30 churches, synagogues, schools and civic groups and operates with substantial volunteer support from the northern Westchester community.
